• Monad is a new bytecode-equivalent EVM L1 with over 10,000 tps, 1s block times, single-slot (1s) finality, and reasonable hardware requirements
• We achieve this through relentless optimization of the EVM (a from-scratch implementation in C++) as well as a few specific areas of algorithmic improvement:
  • Optimistic parallel execution
  • MonadDb (custom state database for storing merkle trie data, supporting high-performance parallel access)
  • Asynchronous execution (execution begins on a block after consensus completes, running in parallel to the next block’s consensus)
  • MonadBFT (high-performance consensus mechanism based on the DiemBFT paper with various improvements to gossip and message processing)
• We believe this level of throughput is needed to support any reasonably interactive user-facing apps that aspire to mass user adoption.
  • Early focus will be on high-fidelity DeFi: fully on-chain limit order books and high-fidelity oracles, as well as an ecosystem of apps composing on top of them, for greatly reduced slippage and higher capital efficiency
  • We also envision a few other verticals with early affinity:
    • sports betting
    • interactive collectibles/NFTs
    • Anything with a lot of users or a lot of transactions. For example, a single app with 1M DAUs with 50 tx/user/day will require 50M tx/day (500 tps).

WTF is TPS?

The Monad Difference

As noted above, the Monad blockchain is a Layer 1 blockchain that brings exceptional performance to the Ethereum Virtual Machine by introducing parallel execution and superscalar pipelining. Unlike other EVM blockchains, Monad is redesigned from the ground up with custom execution and consensus clients, offering 10,000 TPS and single-slot finality with full EVM bytecode compatibility. Developers enjoy the benefits of composability and portability due to the preservation of ETH RPC APIs and common tooling and infrastructure.

Whereas L2 solutions increase execution bandwidth by sacrificing decentralization, Monad takes a different approach. Asynchronous, optimistic parallel execution, and a bespoke state database optimized for Merkle Patricia Trie data (MonadDb) are the cornerstones of EVM scalability, while high-performance consensus (MonadBFT) unlocks decentralization through modest hardware requirements and optimized network communication. Significant improvements to the EVM architecture will allow ambitious teams to bring novel and performance-oriented distributed applications to market.
